Evonik Industries with PLEXIGLAS® in Rinspeed XchangE concept car
These days, cars offer drivers all manner of assistance, from parking assist systems and bending lights to navigation systems, ESP and ABS, but self-driving cars that require no intervention from drivers are more of a distant dream. But perhaps not completely: Renowned automobile companies are already working to make life even easier for drivers. Inventive developers like Frank M. Rinderknecht from Switzerland with his Rinspeed company are presenting complete concept cars such as the XchangE to an amazed professional public. He is supported by experts from the Essen-based specialty chemicals group Evonik Industries.
PLEXIGLAS®, the Evonik product that is used in the XchangE, does not only produce a unique driving ambience, it also replaces some metal and glass structures in the vehicle, which leads to weight savings. This acrylic material (PMMA) also offers designers huge creative scope in terms of forming, and makes it possible to integrate a number of different functions. The lighting in the car headliner and the cross car beam are equipped with PLEXIGLAS® LED for edge lighting. This light-diffusing, transparent specialty product has special light-guiding properties that create a unique atmosphere inside the vehicle. This material also offers more uniform light distribution that ensures optimal luminous efficiency. PLEXIGLAS® is also found in the XchangE in high-gloss interior trim and the center console panel. On car exteriors, it is used among other things in rear spoilers, as a cover for taillights and for optically ultra-pure headlight lenses.
PLEXIGLAS® offers a multitude of benefits for automotive construction. Added to the design options mentioned above, it offers convincing resistance to weathering and aging, and can be produced in every imaginable color. Injection-molded non-transparent components have no need for painting or laminating. This makes these components with molded-in color from PLEXIGLAS® environmentally friendly and economical because it eliminates the need for painting, thereby reducing component costs by up to 40 percent.
Through its Automotive Industry Team (AIT), Evonik provides ongoing impetus for mobility of the future, in cooperation with the automobile industry and other project partners. Specialists from various business units in the company develop innovative material solutions for the automotive sector in the fields of lightweight design construction, fuel savings, lighting and surface technologies. The pathbreaking concepts for components in the XchangE were created in close cooperation between AIT, the Acrylic Polymers Business Line of Evonik and Rinspeed.
